Sophocles!
Sophocles was born in around 496 B.C near Athens, Greece. His father was a successful and wealthy slave owner. Sophocles was well educated in music dance and gymnastics. In 468 B.C Sophocles
defeated the famous playwright Aeschyus in a drama contest. He became more popular and wrote more and more plays. Tradition says he learned his writing from Aeschyus.
Sophocles had 3 different periods were he grew as a playwright,
1. Imitation of the style of Aeschylus- deals with the relationship between gods and men.
2. Use of an artificial style- deals with how characters dealt with stress or mental pressure
3. Use of a style that is most expressive of character- deals with indepth character traits and most of his surviving works are from this period.

Sophocles outside of writing
Sophocles was married to a wife named Nicostrata and had a son Iophon and Sophocles. Later in his life he had an affair with a women named Theoris and had a son with her named Ariston. There are only two known portraits of Sophocles. One is painting in the Stoa, in which he was represented as playing the harp and he bronze statue standing in a theater. Sophocles died in 406 B.C, he was about 90 years old.
